Common AC and heat pump problems we diagnose

Most "my house is not cool" calls come down to a small set of issues — but the right fix depends on whether it is a central AC, a mini-split, or a heat pump in cooling mode. We diagnose first, then explain options in plain language.

  • AC or heat pump runs but does not cool
  • Frozen evaporator coil or ice on the lineset
  • Outdoor unit not running
  • Refrigerant leak symptoms
  • Thermostat or wiring problems
  • Ductwork or airflow restrictions

Why a "not cooling" heat pump usually is not an AC problem (and vice versa)

Heat pumps cool with the same components as an AC, but the control logic, reversing valve, and defrost cycle add their own failure modes. If your heat pump is not cooling, the diagnostic path is different from a typical AC. Same with mini-splits — the indoor head, communication wiring, and outdoor inverter all matter. We approach each system on its own terms.

Repair, tune-up, or replacement?

Sometimes the right answer is a clean diagnostic and a small repair. Sometimes it is a seasonal tune-up to prevent the same call next summer. And occasionally the honest answer is replacement, because the cost of repair on a 15-year-old unit does not pay back. We tell you which it is.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my AC not cooling?

Most common causes: low refrigerant (often a leak), a frozen coil, a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor, or a clogged filter blocking airflow. We diagnose before we recommend.

Why is my heat pump not cooling?

Heat pumps share components with AC but add a reversing valve, defrost board, and control logic. The fix could be similar to an AC problem — or specific to heat pump cooling mode. We diagnose first.

My mini-split stopped cooling — what now?

Check that the remote and indoor head are in cool mode and the filters are clean. If that does not help, call us — ductless systems can have inverter board, communication-wire, or refrigerant issues that need a technician.

Should I turn the system off if it is blowing warm air?

If the indoor coil is icing or there is water leaking, yes — turn it off at the thermostat to prevent damage. Then book service.

How soon can someone come out for a scheduled service visit?

For scheduled service, diagnostics, and tune-ups we book the next available slot in your area and tell you the realistic timing up front. If your system is fully down right now and the home is uncomfortable, our same-day Emergency HVAC dispatch is a faster path — call your local branch and ask for emergency dispatch.

What does an AC or heat pump tune-up include?

Cleaning the outdoor coil, checking refrigerant charge, electrical connections, capacitor health, thermostat operation, filter and airflow check, and condensate drain. The goal is fewer breakdowns and steady efficiency.

How do I know if repair or replacement makes more sense?

Big factors: age of the system (12+ years usually tips toward replacement), repair cost vs replacement cost, refrigerant type, and how much comfort you are losing. We give you a straight call after the diagnostic.
